Small Cent Varieties

The following table provides a list of all Small Cent varieties by type of strike and metal that the Royal Canadian Mint produced since 1920. The Business strike one cent coins are circulation coins that were produced for spending for each year from 1920 to 2012; Proof Like strike one cent coins are found in sets produced from 1953 to 1967; Numismatic BU (NBU) strike one cent coins are found in sets produced from 1968 to 2010; Specimen strike one cent coins are found in sets dating back as far as 1920, but have not been consistently produced each year; and, Proof strike one cent coins are found in sets produced from 1981 to 2012. This list does not contain the special edition Farewell to the Penny issue coins the Mint Produced in 2012.

* - Proof strike one cent coins were made of copper every year except for 2012 when the mint produced both a copper and a 99.99% fine silver proof one cent coin.

  1. There has to be some errors on this checklist because I cannot find some of the coins listed, and nobody has them. I also cannot find any information about them anywhere to prove they exist. This checklist would have been better if it came with photos of each penny in MS, PL, SP, and/or PR RED. Seeing a nice example of each would help with the credibility of the list, and help new collectors identify the varieties listed.
